La Mesa

La Mesa: The Outdoor Haven in the City. Founded in 1869 and known as “The Jewel of the Hills”, La Mesa dazzles every day with extravagant aerial views of San Diego. East of the coast and sitting higher than most of its neighboring communities, La Mesa (Spanish for “The Table”) offers visitors and residents endless, free outdoor activities with the convenience of a city setting.

Only a few miles separate a day of fun at Lake Murray from a relaxing evening watching the sunset atop Mount Helix. Lake Murray provides the perfect urban setting for fishing, boating and kayaking without the long distance drive to outlying lakes. At Mount Helix Park, hikers, bikers and even four-legged friends can enjoy the view from Mount Helix’s summit. Planning a family picnic or event? Ample parking is always available at the picnic area and summit for those wanting to enjoy the view without the added strenuous effort.

Getting in touch with the inner artist in all of us, Inspire San Diego Studio offers date night painting events, family-friendly workshops and private art parties. Bolt Brewery’s craft brews are a work of art themselves with eclectic yet delicious brews like Mango Me Crazy and Chocolate Stout. For those with a fruity palate preference the San Pasqual Winery also offers weekend wine tastings that come highly recommended from previous taste testers.

Much like its neighboring sister community El Cajon, La Mesa offers many outdoor festivals throughout the year that have become staple events know to San Diego. The La Mesa Walkway of the Stars located in the urban park downtown, commemorates the countless volunteer hours donated to the city. In La Mesa, everyone is a star!Oktoberfest is La Mesa’s signature festival filling over 20,000 stomachs with savory sauerkraut and stout for three full days. Sundays at Six offer free concerts during June and July at Harry Griffen Park while Christmas in the Village serves up a warm mug of eggnog during the crisp winter months. There’s always an event to look forward to year-round on the calendar in Downtown La Mesa.

Not only are there many attractions and recreational activities available, but for everyday living La Mesa-Spring Valley School District operates the most elementary and middle schools in San Diego County. The focus on family values, education, outdoor recreation and volunteer service revives hope for future generations in La Mesa.
