Encinitas – Old Encinitas

What’s old is new again in Old Encinitas, considered by many to be the surfing Mecca of California. You don’t have to be a surfer to take advantage of all that Old Encinitas 92024 has to offer. Sure, iconic locations such as Swamis beach, an internationally known surfing spot with epic waves and glorious sunset views are a surfer’s paradise. However, its newly revitalized, pedestrian-friendly downtown area invites you to browse the many unique boutique shops and locally owned eateries that line Historic Highway 101. When one thinks of classic, natural beach towns, one can easily find Old Encinitas on that list.

Old Encinitas was once a sleepy part of the greater Encinitas area, known for its ‘hippie vibe” and characterized by the beach houses, cottages, and luxury condominiums that lie west of the 101. The city of Encinitas is in itself, an attractive place to live, whether you live “over the hill” in New Encinitas or call Old Encinitas home.

Over the last 10 years or so, recent developments in Downtown Encinitas have given the Old Encinitas area a stunning makeover. Sure, you can still find many remnants of the past, such as the historic La Paloma Theater built in 1928 that plays host to independent movies, surf movies, and the occasional music concert. Take a cruise west of the 101, and head down Third Street where you’ll find The Boathouses – two privately owned boat houses that have never been docked in water. One of the most historical sites is The Self Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens and Hermitage (founded in 1937), which is instantly recognized by the huge Golden Lotus entrance.

Of course, no visit to Encinitas is complete until you go to Moonlight Beach. Enjoy a breathtaking sunset or take part in surf and sand activities. Moonlight Beach is notable for its well-kept beach and family-friendly picnic area. After the beach, stroll into Downtown Encinitas and take care of your grocery needs shopping at Whole Foods Market, a supermarket chain specializing in organic foods.

In the Lumberyard Shopping Center, you can find a variety of restaurants for every type of palate and a plethora of galleries, boutique shops, and coffee shops. Craving sushi? Head over to Sakura Bana and satisfy your sushi craving. Make your way to the Lumberyard Tavern and try the mouth-waterning Tri-Tip sandwich. Several of the shops inside the Lumberyard Tavern embody the “Spirit of the 60’s”, keeping the vibe of Old Encinitas alive and well. Feel free to sip on fine wine, enjoy San Diego craft beer or order a cup of coffee and hang out outside, near the fountain, people watching and taking in the life of Old Encinitas.

If you plan to live in Old Encinitas 92024, you are more likely going to find used homes for sale. Of course, most of the used homes for sale range from small beach homes and cottages, to beachfront mansions and luxury condominiums. That said, one of the newest housing developments resides in the architecturally impressive Pacific Station. Here, you will find luxury condominiums smack dab in the heart of downtown Encinitas.

The community of Old Encinitas is made for walking and biking. In fact, thanks to the nearby Coaster station, you can make your way, by train, to downtown San Diego or up the coast to Oceanside. The spirit of beautiful beaches and a vibrant community await you in Old Encinitas.
